A heartfelt thanks to members of the Alaska Library Association - Juneau Chapter:  including Sheri Somerville, Freya Anderson, Katie Fearer, Daniel Cornwall, MJ Grande, Louann Gagne, and Paige Merriam for their help weeding Harborview Library.  It was indeed a work party.

Thanks, too, to Julie Leary, who provided easy instructions, all the needed tools, and yummy snacks.

Next meeting:

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24th at noon, at the Legislative Library in the Terry Miller Building (uphill from the Capitol).  Bring your lunch and join us!

Do you have a portable project for us to work on during lunch?  Contact Freya.

New!

5/27/09 - In the AkLA-J chapter meeting yesterday in the beautiful Gastineau Elementary Library, it was mentioned that some local folks would be helped by basic cataloging training.  Although not perfect, we do have some resources in place for obtaining this:

  • Take online classes through BCR (or elsewhere).  Although there are usually fees, all Alaskan libraries are eligible for member pricing.  Perhaps the easiest place to look first is the AkLA Continuing Education page for upcoming continuing education opportunities: http://akla-continuing-education.pbworks.com/FrontPage.  Do you know of other CE resources available in Alaska (either in person or online) that are not listed here?  Please let me know.
  • Work with the AkLA CE Committee (see me) and/or Cataloging Round Table and/or AkASL to set up local workshops.  We would probably want at least offer to do something that is offered in Anchorage and Fairbanks as well, but we might be able to get grant funding to at least partially alleviate the cost.
  • When you have specific questions, there are people who can help.  Consider contacting one of the local catalogers, or pose your question statewide by joining the Cataloging Round Table list.  Just go to http://akla.org/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/list/catalog/, fill in your email address, choose subscribe, and submit.  Find out about other AkLA lists at http://www.akla.org/list/index.html.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions?  Please respond to the list at juneaulist@akla.org, or contact Freya.

4/13/09 - Want input on when we have our meetings?  Some have already responded, but it's not too late.  If you live in Juneau and would like to attend meetings, just go to the following poll and enter your preferences.  You can ignore the dates (those were required in order to check on the days).  And be sure to scroll to the right to see options for a whole week!

4/1/09 - No joke!

What: AkLA-J work party!

Where: Harborview library, in the Marie Drake building

When: Tuesday, April 21, 2009, 5:00-6:30 pm.

At our last meeting, we decided to replace meetings with work parties on alternate months, starting with April, when we'll help Julie Leary and Laura Imamura at the Harborview Elementary School library, currently located in the Marie Drake building.  This collection needs to be weeded in preparation for moving back into the Harborview building, where the library space will be somewhat smaller.  For more information, or to volunteer at another time, see Julie's description.  Do you have a project coming up at your Juneau area library that you could use some help with?  Get in touch with Freya Anderson at the State Library to get on the list.

I've upgraded our wiki to the new version, as would shortly be required.  I think this version is more user friendly, but there are a couple of changes:

  • the old access keys will no longer work.  If you would like to have access to make changes and additions to this page, please contact me (Freya) so I can add you;
  • files no longer have icons showing file type, so pay attention to the extensions (or, maybe I'm just linking wrong, so let me know if you know otherwise);
  • new look and feel;
  • more flexibility.
