A big thanks to MJ Grande for helping over Spring Break. If anyone has time between now and June 12th, please let me know - we are still weeding and will be packing beginning around June 5th.
Thanks

Laura Imamura will be working March 22,23,24, and 25. Sunday through Wednesday 9:00 - 12:00. If anyone is available to help weed, or possibly do other jobs it will be greatly appreciated. Her phone number is in the phone book.
Thanks
Julie
Hello all~
Julie Leary, the librarian at the Harborview library (currently in Marie Drake) needs some assistance weeding, packing and unpacking the collection. The space in the new school will be smaller, so they need to weed about 4000 volumes, ideally during spring break (March 23-27). If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Julie directly at 523-1866 or julie_leary@jsd.k12.ak.us.
I asked Julie some questions that I thought folks might have, and you can see the answers below, in blue:
The Harborview Library which is located in Marie Drake will be moving in
August to our newly renovated location in the Harborview building. Because there will not be as much shelf space, I am undergoing a weeding project now.(The collection is in need of weeding anyway) Laura Imamura will be working 20 hours over the Spring Break which is March 23rd-27th weeding the non-fiction section. (I will be out of town during this time) If this is an appropriate request this is our first request for assistance. In addition, we will be packing up the library hopefully the week of June 8th. Then unpacking sometime toward mid to end of August.
This would again require a request for assistance, if appropriate. I
would also be interested in any help at anytime ongoing from now until
the move, again if this is a possibility. I lot to ask, but any help
would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Julie Leary

* Do you have specific guidelines for potential weeders to follow? I know that this can be difficult to determine, but even if you do have guidelines, how much judgment are you expecting from volunteers? If you could quantify this in some way, I think that would be helpful for people.
While I am out of town, during Spring break, Laura will make most of the decisions of what to weed, although any suggestions from experienced librarians would be great. The volunteers can delete the item from the computer, which is basically scanning the barcode and following a few more commands. There may be a situation where they will check copy status, circulation statistics and perhaps help decide if the book is still worthwhile to our collection, but Laura will have the last say. We have many old books, and duplicates, so some decisions will be fairly easy. I have to withdraw about 4000 books, so we are seriously looking at the collection and what is being used. Also, I need someone to line out the barcode and property stamps with a black marker, and either stamp or write discard in the book, then box them up. Either we or our custodian will help with the removal of the boxes.
* Are there any physical or time constraints? I think you mentioned it might be cold. Would there be any climbing or poor light? Are people looking in boxes or on shelves? Would people need to volunteer during school hours, or could they come at all on evenings or weekends?
The books are on the shelves, so there will be some stooping and bending, but certainly a chair or stool could be used for some of the levels. Evenings and weekends could work, but for now we would love someone during Spring Break March 23rd - March27th. No climbing, light is okay, but spine labels are a bit faded. I will speak with Maintenance to see if heat could be left on during the break. And, I will ask Laura about her hours and let you know.
* What kind of assistance are you looking for after the weeding and before the shift?
The boxes are flat at the moment, so taping the bottom of the box. After the book has been deleted, just putting them in a box and taping the box up. If you are talking about assistance for the move in June or August then it would be more physical, like taking books off of the shelves and putting them into boxes, or taking books our of boxes and putting them on the shelves. And, there may be some packing of other materials in
the work room - supplies and such. I have a list of books in "lost" status that just need to be deleted from our system, this could be done at anytime.
